The 2025 UEFA Europa League final is fast approaching and will take place on May 21 at the Estadio San Mamés
A 3-0 defeat in Bilbao all but ended Athletic's chances of reaching the final. Meanwhile, Manchester United moved closer to the trophy with another win, having focused their efforts on this tournament at the expense of their performance in the Premier League.
Playing at a packed San Mamés, the hosts could have taken a 2-0 lead after a dangerous header from Iñaki Williams, but Victor Lindelof saved the team by deflecting Alex Berenguer's shot from inside the penalty area. However, the situation changed in the 30th minute, when Harry Maguire delivered an accurate cross from the right and Casemiro headed the ball into the net. Seven minutes later, VAR confirmed a penalty for a foul by Dani Vivián on Rasmus Hojlund, which led to the defender being sent off. Bruno Fernandes coolly converted the penalty, ignoring the noise from the stands.
United extended their lead to 3-0 before the break thanks to a clever strike from Manuel Ugarte and a precision strike from Fernandes. Ruben Amorim's side could have scored more in the second half when Casemiro headed dangerously wide again from a corner. A fourth goal would have sealed the tie, but even without it, the three-goal deficit looks insurmountable for the Spaniards heading into the return leg at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Tottenham's 3-1 win over Bodo-Glimt in the first leg of the semi-final makes an English final likely.
Despite sitting 14th in the Premier League and 21 points behind the top five, United's chances of qualifying for the Champions League via the Europa League are growing. A convincing win in Bilbao will almost guarantee them a place in the final. With players like Fernandes, the team is ready to fight to the end. The Portuguese has pulled the team out of difficult situations more than once and once again showed his skills. Only Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (34) and Radamel Falcao (30) have scored more goals in the Europa League than Fernandes with his 27 goals.
Tickets for the 2025 UEFA Europa League Final are a unique opportunity to witness the game of the best European clubs and enjoy the incredible emotions of a football festival.
