This year, the 70th season of the main European football championship among clubs is being held under the Swiss system for the first time
Last tournament winners Real Madrid once again confirmed their high class by beating Atletico in a penalty shootout and securing a place in the quarter-finals. Let us recall that last season the Madrid club won its fifteenth championship title, and this year they started their performance at the same high level. The return match with Atletico, according to the League schedule, is scheduled for March 12, 2025.
The first game against the team led by one of the highest paid coaches, Diego Simeone, took place at Real's home arena, the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid. Already in the fourth minute of the match, to the approving shouts of the fans, Rodrigo, the home team's striker, opened the scoring. But in the 32nd minute, Julian Alvarez of Atletico equalized the score, scoring a spectacular goal from a corner. The decisive goal in the 55th minute was scored by Real Madrid midfielder Brahim Diaz, which brought the team a confident victory.
According to the rules of the Champions League, the winner of the tournament automatically gets the right to play in the next draw in 2026 and will have the opportunity to compete for the UEFA Super Cup in 2025.
