Olympiastadion Berlin

Description

Olympiastadion Berlin, also known as the famous Olympic Stadium in the city of Berlin, is a multi-purpose soccer arena that is the home stadium of Hertha Football Club and the German national team. The stadium has a UEFA category 4 classification.

The Olympic Stadium was built before World War I and was scheduled to be opened for the 1916 Summer Olympics. However, construction of the Olympiastadion Berlin did not begin until 1934 and was completed in 1936. The architectural design was developed by Werner March. In the year of the stadium's opening, the famous Olympic Games opening ceremony was held, which was broadcast on television. The competitions of the 1936 Summer Olympics were also held here.

The Olympic Stadium was destroyed during World War II, but was completely rebuilt in the mid-1960s. It underwent a major reconstruction in 1974, as part of Germany's preparations for the FIFA World Cup. Three matches of the group tournament were played here.

In 2006, the Olympic Stadium received its modern appearance after the reconstruction before the World Cup. The total cost of the reconstruction amounted to 242 million euros. It was here that the final match of the tournament was played.

In 2011, the Olympic Stadium hosted the opening match of the Women's World Cup. And in 2015, the final match of the UEFA Champions League was held here.
