Description
Sovcombank Arena (ex. Nizhny Novgorod Stadium) is a modern sports and entertainment complex in Nizhny Novgorod, built specifically to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup matches. Compliance with all international standards allowed the arena to receive the highest UEFA category.
The arena's stands are designed to accommodate 45,000 fans at a time. At the same time, 902 seats are intended for visitors with disabilities and their accompanying persons. The location in a picturesque area near the river, a park laid out in the area and a developed internal infrastructure make the arena one of the favorite places to visit for local residents. The building is designed in a restrained classical style, so it fits harmoniously into the architectural ensemble of the area.
The first football match at the arena took place on April 15, 2018, as part of the FNL. The grand opening took place on May 6. During the FIFA World Cup, Sovcombank Arena (ex. Nizhny Novgorod Stadium) hosted 6 matches - 4 in the group stage and 2 in the playoffs. After the completion of the international tournament, the arena hosted matches of the Russian national football team, the fight for the Russian Super Cup, qualifying tournaments for the European Football Championship, home matches of FC Nizhny Novgorod and Tambov, and concerts of Russian pop stars.
