Cherchesov explained the absence of Lunev in the application for Euro 2020
The head coach of the Russian national team Stanislav Cherchesov commented on the decision not to include goalkeeper Andrei Lunev, as well as defenders Ilya Samoshnikov and Roman Evgeniev in the final bid for Euro 2020.
"A question about Lunev? He is an experienced goalkeeper, but we thought that the two goalkeepers Yuri Dupin and Anton Shunin had a smoother season, and we are considering Matvey Safonov for the future. This time he stayed with us for a long time, it is clear that he is already settling in and showing his best qualities. It is no coincidence that we gave him a few minutes to play with Poland.
According to Samoshnikov, the issue was resolved by itself, at the penultimate training session he pulled the back of his thigh. Yesterday we specially did an MRI in Poland, it fell out for at least seven days. Evgeniev worked well, gave himself completely, but for now there are issues that I hope we will solve over time, and he will be in the national team.
The guys have been warned that they will train with us before the start of the tournament. Life has already taught us, a healthy player falls asleep in the evening, and in the morning there is no more," Cherchesov said.
In addition to Lunev, Samoshnikov and Evgeniev, midfielder Arsen Zakharyan, who missed the training camp of the national team in Austria due to angina, did not get into the application for the tournament.
The European Championship will be held from June 11 to July 11. Russia will play Belgium in Group B on June 12, Finland on June 16 and Denmark on June 21.
