Built in 1956, the stadium originally had a capacity of 100,000 spectators and was called the Zentralstadion. Following its renovation in 1998 and subsequent lease by Red Bull GmbH in 2010, it received its current name. During European competitions, the arena is known as the RB Arena in accordance with UEFA regulations.

A historically significant event for the stadium was the hosting of five matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, making it the only venue in the former GDR to have hosted this tournament.
